Who should get a test?
- Anyone who wants to
- Anyone who has shared a needle or works with IV drug equipment
- Anyone who has had unprotected sex
- Women who are pregnant (provincial guidelines for pregnant women recommend testing for HIV)
- Anyone who has had piercing or tattooing done
- Anyone who has had a recent sexually transmitted infection
How to get an appointment for HIV testing:
- Talk to your nurse or doctor
- You will be given an appointment for the counselling & test, usually within 1 or 2 weeks
- The test is confidential & free

- A person can have HIV for years and not know it
- Persons with HIV are more prone to tuberculosis or other bacterial infections
- Women with HIV may have different symptoms than men
- Pregnant women with HIV can protect their baby by getting treatment while pregnant
