HIV Pre & Post Test Counselling

A blood test is available at Mount Carmel Clinic to find out if you have HIV (the virus that causes AIDS). Talk to your doctor or nurse about booking a test. You must see a counsellor before the blood is taken.

Why see a counsellor before and after the test?
  • To get information
  • Talk about your own risks, fears & concerns
  • Learn about treatment available for people with HIV
  • Prepare a plan & supports if your test is positive
  • Learn about ways to remain HIV negative

Who should get a test?

  • Anyone who wants to
  • Anyone who has shared a needle or works with IV drug equipment
  • Anyone who has had unprotected sex
  • Women who are pregnant (provincial guidelines for pregnant women recommend testing for HIV)
  • Anyone who has had piercing or tattooing done
  • Anyone who has had a recent sexually transmitted infection
